Two Mitacs Globalink Awards Bring Four Interns to MAPS Lab

Bringing early-career researchers into a lab is one of the most rewarding ways to move a research program forward, and international internships widen the pool of talent and perspective.

The MAPS Lab has been awarded two Mitacs Globalink Research Awards to host visiting undergraduate students over three-month research internships. The first, “Towards Sustainable Nowcasting: Exploring Lightweight Models for Local Precipitation Forecasting,” provides CAD 12,000 and supports two students working on efficient models for short-range precipitation prediction. The second, “Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Vessel Trajectory Prediction via Finite Difference Kinematic Modeling,” provides CAD 18,000 and supports three students embedding kinematic physics into trajectory prediction.

Together, these awards fund a cohort of visiting interns who join ongoing MAPS Lab efforts in physics-informed machine learning, spanning both atmospheric and maritime mobility. The projects give students hands-on experience with real data and modern modeling while contributing to active research questions in the lab.
