Two OFI Seed Fund Projects on Climate AI and Citizen Science

Turning climate research into tools that reach people takes both new modeling and new ways to engage communities. Two seed projects at the MAPS Lab take on each side of that challenge.

The MAPS Lab has received two awards through the Transform Climate Action (TCA) and Ocean Frontier Institute Seed Fund program, each providing CAD 20,000 for one year. The first, “Glacier Tracking and Forecasting through AI-Driven Multimodal Climate Modeling,” develops models that combine multiple data sources to monitor and forecast glacier change. The second, “AI-Driven Cross-Platform Mobile App for Citizen Science Engagement,” builds accessible mobile tools that invite the public into climate data collection, and is co-led with Dr. Oladapo Oyebode.

Together, these projects extend the lab’s Transform Climate Action work, connecting AI methods for environmental monitoring with the citizen science engagement that makes climate data more inclusive and actionable. They also create opportunities for students in the lab to contribute across modeling, application development, and community-facing design.
